Our Purpose

Salmon are integral to our way of lifeTraditional salmon harvesting and processing is how we feed our families and preserve our culture. There is a direct correlation between the region’s diminishing salmon runs and an uptick in mental and physical health ailments for the Native people that depend on them.

Increased reliance on processed food has caused a documented spike in diabetes and heart disease, while the socio-economic collapse of fishing in the region assaults the mental and economic health of people who depend on salmon for their livelihood.

Action is needed so fishing doesn’t become the past for the Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim. Our Future is Fish.

Who We Are

We are a perspective collective, sharing how the disappearance of salmon from Western Alaska and the Interior affects our local communities and our ways of life.

Salmon People is an initiative of the Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim Tribal Consortium.  We are an organization formed from the joint efforts of our three partner organizations: the Association of Village Council Presidents, the Kuskokwim River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, and the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission
